The Rattlesnake Calathea (Calathea lancifolia) is grown for its long, undulating leaves marked with alternating dark green blotches and a deep purple underside. It stays compact and thrives in the filtered light most Indian homes already have near a window.

Where the pattern shows best

Its narrow, ruffled leaves catch the light beautifully when placed where they get some indirect brightness, so a living room console, bedroom corner, balcony that misses harsh sun, or a reception and entrance table all work well. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades the leaf markings.
